Paul -

  Thanks for your observations, suggestions and kind words.  This has, indeed, been an unusual event.  Randy noted that the weather folks on a local channel said it is the largest snowfall since April 2018.  And, on Channel 11 they noted we are already closing in on our average annual snowfall - - and it is only early January!!  Once we survive it, I'm sure there will be some serious conversations about the lawn and snow contract.  It might be a sufficiently large topic that would require that we get the room at the library and see what we can get for positive input from our neighbors.

  All - Andy E pointed out that he thought the contract had a longer clearance time for a larger snow.  In fact the contract states:

  "For snowfall between 1 1/2 inches and 8 inches - the snow will be removed by plows and shoveling crews within 12 hours of cessation;

  For snowfall events greater than 8 inches but less than 12 inches - the snow will be removed by plows and shoveling crews within 24 hours of cessation."

  I think we will stay below 12inches, so the 24 hours probably holds.  Dave A

Thank you all for your questions and comments.

Let me add to the helpful explanations which Dave has provided. Our contract provides that for continuous snowfalls exceeding four inches or more, the drive lanes and streets will be “opened up” in other words, cleared of snow to provide more safety and convenience.

For snowfall events greater than eight inches, but less than 12 inches, the snow will be removed within 24 hours of the end of the storm event that exceeds the “trigger” amounts of one or one-and-a-half-inches.

In the event of a “rare” excessive snowfall of a foot of snow or more, however, the contract provides that the contractor use its “best efforts” to remove snow on a timely basis.

Given the extraordinary snowfalls we’ve experience this winter, everyone concerned is trying to get the snow cleared as expeditiously as possible. And, certainly, our experiences will help inform our future contract negotiations as any issues are identified by these experiences.
