Volunteer Spotlight!

  Volunteers monitoring stream.

This month, we want to highlight the Creek Seekers at McDowell Nature Preserve, who participate in volunteer monitoring through the NC Stream Watch Program. NC Stream Watch is a program that allows citizens to share what they see in streams near them. The Creek Seekers Stream Watch program is available at McDowell Nature Preserve throughout the summer! For more information and to get involved, check out their registration page or check out our ‘Upcoming Events’ below to register for the next event!

The Adopt-A-Stream program offers a great chance for your community to help improve stream health and monitor for surface water pollution. While many volunteers work hard collecting tons of trash from streams each year, there are still many stream segments available for adoption across the county. Segments along Ramah, McKee, Long, Clear, and Coffey Creek are available for adoption. To find out which segments are available near you, visit our Adopt-A-Stream Map and explore our Volunteer page to learn how to get involved.

Know Before You Go. Child and Male riding on a tube on water.

Many of us are out enjoying our lakes around the county, and it’s important to know that the waters are safe for contact. Orange water could indicate excess sediment, gray water might suggest sewage contamination, and green water could mean a harmful algal bloom. If you see any discolored water, please report it to 311. Always wait 72 hours after a rain event before engaging in water recreation in our coves. To be notified of any swim advisories in our area, text MECKNOSWIM to 888-777 to have them sent directly to your phone. We will also post updates all summer long on our social media pages (@StormWaterCM).
