Neighborhood Board Retreat deadline is quickly approaching


The City of Charlotte’s Neighborhood & Business Services department will host a Neighborhood Board Retreat on Saturday, Feb. 7. The event will be held 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Central Piedmont Community College's Overcash Building, located at 1201 Elizabeth Avenue.
 
The retreat is open to all neighborhood organizations and business or merchant associations in Charlotte city limits. In addition to current board members, participating organizations are encouraged to invite neighbors, business owners, school representatives and nonprofit partners that may help them achieve their goals. Each organization can have five to 15 participants.

Neighborhood Board Retreat attendees will receive:

  • A customized Quality of Life Study report 
  • Networking and idea sharing with other community leaders
  • Guidance with planning yearly goals and board priorities  
  • Idea development with trained, experienced facilitators 
  • Expert support from staff and community resources   
  • A $1,500 Neighborhood Matching Grant credit incentive for eligible neighborhoods


Capacity is limited. Applicants will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to first-time attendees. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Mayor's Mentoring Alliance to honor local mentors, mentees


This month, the Mayor’s Mentoring Alliance will recognize and celebrate local mentors and mentees at its annual awards ceremony. The awards ceremony will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 at Booth Playhouse, located at 130 North Tryon Street.

Awards will be presented to Charlotte’s mentor, mentee, best practices agency, group mentors and business partner of the year. Mayor Dan Clodfelter will be the special guest.

The Mayor’s Mentoring Alliance, which is celebrating its 20th year, supports mentoring organizations in their mission to create impactful and enduring mentor-mentee relationships that make a positive impact on Charlotte’s youth.

Could your neighborhood use $25,000?


If so, apply for a Neighborhood Matching Grant today! 

The Neighborhood Matching Grants program awards funding to eligible neighborhood-based organizations for community improvement projects. Organizations can submit applications to receive up to $25,000 for projects ranging from landscaping and bike racks to Little Free Libraries and lighting upgrades. Organizations are also required to match the funds received with cash, volunteer labor, or in-kind donations.

Neighborhood Matching Grants are awarded four times a year, with the next round of applications due Sunday, Feb. 15. Pre-application workshops will be held at noon on Jan. 7 and 6 p.m. on Jan. 8 at Old City Hall, located at 600 East Trade Street. Parking is available behind Old City Hall or at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center.

NeighborWoods Tree Canopy Program


TreesCharlotte’s NeighborWoods program strengthens and beautifies communities by providing trees, education and planting supplies free of charge to neighborhoods with tree planting capacity.

Neighborhood associations can apply to receive trees and planting assistance for common areas and homes in their community. Pre-application letters of intent for the fall 2015 - spring 2016 planting season are now being accepted. Attendance at a pre-application workshop is required.

Upcoming workshops will be held at Old City Hall, located at 600 East Trade Street, on the following dates:

•5:30 - 6:30 p.m., Jan. 21, Feb. 11, and March 4 and 18
• Noon - 1 p.m., Feb. 10 and March 10
