Solid Waste Services Recognized as a NC Smart Fleet

City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services was among five Centralina Clean Fuels Coalition members to be recognized as a NC Smart Fleet for efforts to reduce petroleum usage. Solid Waste Services was recognized during the first Southeast Alternative Fuels Conference in Raleigh at the end of October. The Clean Fuels Coalition, housed at the Centralina Council of Governments, is this region's grassroots initiative of the US Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program focused on reducing our dependence on petroleum through cost-saving fleet improvements. Others recognized included CMS, UNC Charlotte, Gaston County and the City of Concord.

The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services will collect garbage, recyclables, yard waste and bulky waste on Presidents Day, February 16.

Residents are reminded of the following tips to ensure collection:

  • Bag all garbage before placing it in the rollout cart. Do not overfill the cart.
  • Remove food/liquid residue and lids from all recyclable containers before placing them in the recycling cart. Do not bag recyclables.
  • Trimmings from shrubs and trees must be no longer than five feet in length and no larger than four inches in diameter.
  • Place leaves in untied plastic bags or uncovered trash cans (not City-issued rollout carts).
  • Place collection materials curbside by 6:30 am on collection day. Rollout carts must be removed from curbside by midnight the same day.
  • Place collection items within six feet of the curb. Please do not block the sidewalk.
  • Call 311 (704.336.7600) or visit http://curbit.charlottenc.gov to schedule bulky waste collection.

Do You Know How To Dispose of Firewood?

Firewood Image

Solid Waste frequently finds firewood in our garbage collection trucks. Firewood mixed with household garbage is a potential fire hazard as it could possibly damage the collection truck or harm the collection employee.

Firewood should be placed curbside for yard waste collection on your normal service day. Cut limbs, logs and brush to no more than five feet long and four inches in diameter.
