Today, Charlotte Water has experienced seven water main breaks mostly due to frigid temperatures.  This week's winter weather also resulted in other infrastructure issues such as five traffic signal cables damaged when winds twisted overhead directional signage. Residents of Charlotte-Mecklenburg are being advised to be aware of water main and road problems that can occur as a result of the frigid temperatures our area is experiencing.

The following is important information from Charlotte Water and the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT):

  • Black ice is always dangerous.  During sunny winter days, snow and sleet melts, running off the pavement.  When temperatures drop, water refreezes, glazing over streets and sidewalks.  Black ice forms and can be very difficult for motorists and pedestrians to see.  Caution and slowing down is key to safe driving and walking.

  • Water melting and thawing, followed by hours of freezing can cause the pavement to heave and collapse.  Vehicles driving over will dislodge asphalt chinks and then potholes appear, sometimes very quickly. CDOT Street Maintenance crews are constantly on the watch for them.

  • If you notice water coming from under the street pavement, leaking from a fire hydrant or collecting around a water meter, there could be a leak from a water main or service line.

  • If residents, motorists or pedestrians notice any of these situations, they are advised to call CharMeck 311 immediately.  If a true emergency, they should call 911.

  • Taking steps now can help prevent burst water pipes and costly repairs, especially when temperatures dip well below freezing for extended periods of time.

  • Seal any openings and air leaks in crawl space or basement. Use cardboard, plastic or newspaper to seal air vents if necessary.

  • Open doors on cabinets below sinks to allow warmer room air to circulate around plumbing at night.

  • Locate the master water shut-off valve in your home now in case you experience a burst pipe, and need to cut off your water in a hurry.
