Think your neighborhood or business could use a grant?

Do you know a neighborhood that could benefit from a $5,000 beautification grant or $25,000 neighborhood improvement grant? Or a business that needs grant funding to help with operating expenses and marketing or improving their building's appearance?

Check out the list below to see which Neighborhood & Business Services grant deadlines are quickly approaching.

Neighborhood Matching Grants
The Neighborhood Matching Grants program awards funding to eligible neighborhood-based organizations for community improvement projects. Organizations can submit applications to receive up to $25,000 for projects ranging from landscaping and bike racks to Little Free Libraries and lighting upgrades. Organizations are also required to match the funds received with cash, volunteer labor or in-kind donations.

Neighborhood Matching Grants are awarded four times each year, with the next round of applications due Wednesday, April 15.

Need a little bit more time to prepare your application? After April 15, the next application deadline is Monday, June 15. Pre-application workshops for the June deadline will be held at 600 East Trade Street at noon on April 29 and May 6. Pre-application workshops will also be held at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center at 6 p.m. on April 30 and May 7.

Facade Improvement Grant
NBS’ Facade Improvement Grant assists businesses and commercial property owners with improving their building’s appearance. In doing so, the program helps bring signs, parking and landscaping into conformance with current codes.

As part of the program, the grant provides eligible businesses or property owners with 50 percent reimbursement for certain architectural renovation expenses. Sixty percent reimbursement may be available on a case-by-case basis for businesses who utilize a certified Small Business Enterprise firm.

Applications are due May 15. For more information, contact Veronica Mosley at vmosley@charlottenc.gov.

Business District Organization Grant Program
The Business District Organization Program provides support to foster emerging and existing merchant and business associations serving one of Charlotte’s priority business districts.

The program awards up to $30,000 per year to eligible business associations. Program funds can be used for administrative/operating expenses, special event projects, marketing & promotions and business district communications. Grants are competitive each year.

Proposals and applications are due May 15. For more information, visit the Business District Organization Grant page on NBS' website.

New pilot program provides local high school students with job-readiness skills

The Pre-Apprenticeship Pathway program -- a collaboration between the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP), Transit Management of Charlotte, Charlotte Works and the NC Department of Labor -- teaches high school students basic technical and job-readiness skills for an apprenticeship in Diesel maintenance mechanics.

Students who participate in the program receive classroom and hands-on job training in transit care, mechanics, information technology, operations, finance and more. After the training, interns have the opportunity to apply for a registered apprenticeship with Transit Management of Charlotte at the Charlotte Area Transit System’s transit facility. Once the students have completed the program, they will receive a maintenance mechanics certification and college credit.

The goal of the pilot program, which recently accepted five students, is to develop a pipeline of employment for high school students who are interested in diesel mechanics.
