??‹8,000 Lessons and Counting: Park and Rec Continues to Prove that Every Child Can Swim

Last May, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation set out on a mission to teach youth how to swim before the 5th grade. Now, in its second year, the free program has reached more than 8,000 participants and continues to grow.

The initiative was created through a partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a way to teach this important life skill, especially those who can’t afford lessons. It was originally offered at Ray’s Splash Planet but has expanded to other aquatic facilities including West Charlotte High School. Read More

Prescribed fire

Burning for the Better: Prescribed Fire Helps to Protect Wildlife

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is taking steps to reduce the threat of wildfire in County nature preserves through the use of prescribed or controlled burns.

So far this year, staff have conducted 12 prescribed fires throughout the area totaling 390 acres. 

These fires help reduce coverage of invasive species and reduce hazardous fuel buildup, preventing larger, more dangerous fires from occurring. Burns are conducted to mimic natural disturbances as closely as possible. Read More

Park and Recreation, in partnership with the Carolina Panthers, GameTime and Cunningham Recreation, unveiled the new Carolina Panthers Play 60 Challenge Course at Hornets Nest Park on Thursday, May 21, 2015.
