MICHAEL D. BARNES
Mayor Pro Tem Michael D. Barnes, a Democrat, is serving his fifth term on City Council. For eight years, he served as council member representing District 4. In 2013, he was elected at-large and was chosen by his peers to serve as Mayor Pro Tem.
Michael currently chairs the City Council's Economic Development and Global Competitiveness Committee and serves as vice chair of the Community Safety Committee. He is also the City Council representative for Charlotte Center City Partners and is a former member of the North Carolina Governor's Crime Commission. He is also a member of the board of University City Partners.
During his time on council, he has also served as chair of the Budget Committee and vice chair of the Transportation and Planning Committee.
Michael received his bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his law degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law. He is currently the managing member of Barnes Law Office, PLLC and is married with three children.
