??‹??‹??‹The CityLYNX Gold Line??‹ service starts today at 1 p.m.! Riders can acces bus and light rail services, healthcare facilities, entertainment, education and small businesses.

??‹??‹??‹Welcome to the CityLYNX Gold Line, Charlotte's new rail service opened July 14, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Providing a direct link to the heart of Uptown Charlotte, the Gold Line connects riders to bus and light rail services, healthcare facilities, entertainment, education and small businesses. The CityLYNX Gold Line runs from the Time Warner Cable Arena to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center with six stations along the way, complete with a lighted, covered seating area.

The Gold Line will operate seven days a week, running every 15 minutes during peak hours and every 20 minutes during non-peak hours.  Operating hours are:

??‹Monday – Thursday: ??‹6:00am to 11:00pm
??‹Friday: 6:00am to 12:00am??‹
??‹Saturday:  ??‹8:00am to 12:00am
Sunday: ??‹ ??‹9:00am – 7:00pm.

The CityLYNX Gold Line is a free service, so you do not need a ticket to ride. When on or around the streetcar please follow the Rules of Rail Safety??‹ in order to keep the Gold Line safe and enjoyable for everyone. John M. Lewis Jr. has been named the new executive director for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS).

??‹I??‹n making the announcement??‹, City Manager Ron Carlee said that “John brings a wealth of transit knowledge and leadership to our organization.  He has the energy, skill, and commitment to help take CATS to the next level.”

??‹??‹

Lewis will lead countywide transit planning and transit management activities, including developing and promoting a long-term regional vision for transit services, managing existing transit services, designing and managing the future transit system and providing oversight on in-house contracted transit services. 

The executive director of CATS is responsible for building partnerships and strong working relationships with Mecklenburg County, the six incorporated towns located in Mecklenburg County and other city departments. CATS is a department of the City with oversight provided by the regional Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC).

In accordance with the Transit Governance Interlocal Agreement, the recruitment included a panel consisting of City Manager Ron Carlee, Davidson Mayor John Woods and Mecklenburg County Manager Dena Diorio. Charlotte Assistant City Manager Debra Campbell coordinated the process.  Per the agreement, the final selection was made by the City Manager with the concurrence of the County Manager and Mayor Woods.

Lewis is leaving his position as the CEO of Central Florida Regional Transit Authority (Lynx) where he provided strategic leadership to Central Florida’s primary mass transit carrier. Some fast facts:

  • Annual operating budget of over $123 million 
  • 1,200 management and union employees
  • A fleet of more than 300 transit vehicles along 85 fixed routes 
  • Served 30 million passenger trips annually 

Prior to his position at Lynx, Lewis held leadership positions with the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC), Maryland Transit Administration and the Maryland Department of Transportation. Within these positions, he’s managed rail and bus operations, developed bus operations training programs and served as a transit lobbyist.

Lewis earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science with an economics concentration from Allegheny College. He is a member of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators and recently served as the legislative committee chair for the Florida Public Transit Association.  

His salary is $228,698. Lewis will begin his duties in mid-August.??‹??‹??‹
