Wanting to travel, as soon as she was old enough, she applied for a job with the U.S. Information Agency (USIA). After training in Washington, D.C., her first assignment was in the film section of USIA in Tokyo. Next the USIA assigned her to be secretary to the Public Affairs Officer in charge of USIA operations in Germany. Eighteen months later daughter Tova arrived at a time when they normally would have returned to the states. However, the Berlin wall went up in August prior to Tova's birth in October. The uncertainty that followed kept them in Germany until February 1962. In 1962 The Gunters moved to Charlotte where their son Kendall was born in 1964.
