Wedgewood Church Vandalized

Posted in: Madison Park

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The spray paint on the Wedgewood Church sign is gone now, but what it symbolized is still hurting members of the church.

It only took about 10 minutes for Kimberlee Walker to scrub off the sign reading "LGTB Equality."

"There's a lot of ways to get paint off," said Walker.

The sign supporting LGBT Equality has been up for more than a month. Thursday it was targeted by vandals.

"My heart goes out to my LGBT friends," said Wedgewood Church Pastor Chris Ayers.

The church has been promoting LGBT equality for several years. This recent attack comes on the heels of the Charlotte Pride festival.

"This is just one day in a long journey," said Ayers.

Walker, a deacon at Wedgewood Church, is extremely frustrated, but with some gold old-fashioned elbow grease, she was able to clean up the mess.

"No amount of spray paint is going to stop us," Walker said.

For now the church is going to leave up the sign, but are thinking about changing it to "We forgive you," sending a message to the person or persons responsible.

Church Vandalized

Between Wednesday night and Thursday morning Wedgewood's sign and its front entrance doors were vandalized.  The response to the vandalization has been overwhelming on Facebook.  People in the community wanted to know what they could do.  We also are using this unfortunate incident as an opportunity to provide care for those who have been marginalized because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.  We are having a Paint-the-church-doors Gathering at 4 pm on Saturday.  During the worship service, which will last about 30 minutes, various people will have an opportunity to paint on the front doors, which will have been framed/outlined today.
Below are photos of the vandalism.
Thank you for being Wedgewood and providing a prophetic witness for peace and justice.
For the record, our sign was vandalized about 7 years ago.  Someone broke into the sign and used the letters to spell "A Lesbo Church".

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Members of a south Charlotte church want to erase the words that vandals scrawled on a church sign supporting the LGBT community.

The Wedgewood Church will hold an event at 4 p.m. Saturday for the community to paint a rainbow on the church’s front doors.

Someone spray painted an offensive phrase on a sign that promoted LGBT members Thursday.

Church officials said it’s the second time in eight years it has been vandalized.

The church, located at 4800 Wedgewood Drive, will hold a worship service as well.
