Electrical Safety
As you decorate this holiday season, keep these electrical safety tips in mind from E&PM safety manager Jim Emmons:
- Check all lights for broken or cracked sockets. Look for frayed or bare wires, loose connections or damaged plugs. Throw away damaged light sets. Buy lights that have been tested by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
- Don’t overload electrical circuits or outlets. Don’t run electrical cords under rugs or carpets.
- Keep children away from wires and light strings.
- Before you leave the house or retire for the night, turn off the tree lights and other decorations.
- When buying live trees, pick a fresh one and keep it in water as dry trees become a fire hazard. Keep all trees, wreaths and holly away from sources of heat.
