Earl Edward Hoffman, Jr. CHARLOTTE - Earl Edward (Ed) Hoffman, Jr. , D. Min., of Charlotte, NC, died April 2, 2016. A native of Malvern, PA, he was born August 21, 1928, the son of Earl and Agatha Hoffman. Ed grew up in Westchester, PA where he attended St. Agatha Catholic High School. He held a Bachelor of Arts and Masters in Philosophy: Theology and Psychology from Notre Dame University. He studied for four years at Catholic University and received his Doctorate from Holy Cross College. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1955 and was a member of the Religious Order, the Congregation of Holy Cross. He served as Novice Master for the Holy Cross Order in Bennington, Vermont for six years. He was on the faculty at Kings College and Notre Dame University, teaching Philosophy and Theology. He did a Clinical Internship and Residency at Georgia Mental Health Institute. In 1973 he married and moved to Charlotte, and joined The Charlotte Psychiatric Associates, where he had a private practice for 10 years. He later was a Co-founder and Clinical Director of the Dilworth Center for Chemical Dependency. He continued a private practice, specializing in the Disease of Addiction. He served on the founding Board of Directors for Hospice of Charlotte. Ed loved and was beloved by his wife, Irma, their two children Greg and Shana, his grandchildren and his dog and constant companion, Zeke. He was passionate about all things concerning his Alma Mater, Notre Dame University and never missed a chance to cheer for them. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Irma Redd Hoffman and two children: Greg Gordon (Robin) of Charlotte, Shana Strafaci (Joe) of Raleigh and seven grandchildren: Kaitlin and Mason Gordon, Taylor and Olivia Barefoot, Abbey Conklin, Moriah and Isabella Strafaci. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Peter Knoller of Johnsonville, SC, nieces and nephews, Greg Sweeney, Ed Sweeney , Bill Heath, Lynne Hicks, Herb Witter, Milisa Godson, Cindy Ray, Renee Fowler, and Aimee Bennett. He was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Agatha Hoffman and his sister, Margaret (Peg) Hoffman Sweeney. His funeral will be Wednesday, April 6, at 11 am, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, with a reception following the service in the Martha Bowles Parish Hall.
