David George Gale (1941 - 2016)
Obituary
David George Gale, age 75, entered into eternal life on August 27, 2016, at his home, under the care of his family. He was born February 10, 1941 in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Fred Otis Gale and Grace Mollard Martin Gale. He was the youngest of four children.David attended Fenwick High School in Oak Park, IL, and graduated from Elgin Academy in Elgin, IL. He attended several universities, including Belmont Abbey, and served three years in the U.S. Army before graduating from Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. His military service included deployments in Europe and Asia and was awarded various badges, medals, and letters of appreciation and commendation.
David and his family moved from Atlanta to the Lansdowne neighborhood in south Charlotte in 1973. Soon after arriving, the Gale family joined St Gabriel Catholic Church and Sardis Swim & Racquet Club, making lifelong friends at both. David's professional career was in commercial and residential real estate development. Additionally, he held various sales-oriented positions and ended his full-time career as a recruiter for the executive search firm, Sanford Rose Associates.
David enjoyed discussing history and how it relates to the current state of domestic and international affairs. His passion for sports extended to the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Notre Dame athletics and the current NC 4A conference football champions, Charlotte Catholic High Cougars. He enjoyed family vacations to destinations such as Grand Rapids, MI, Mackinaw Island, MI, Rochester, NY, The Avenue of the Giants in Northern California, Monterey, CA and Santa Cruz, CA.
The direction of David's life was forever changed on January 20, 1986, when he attended his first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. He was forever indebted to this fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. On a daily basis, David shared AA's twelve steps and twelve traditions with family, friends, fellow alcoholics, and strangers. An example of the profound impact AA had on David's life was demonstrated recently when he was found speaking with a fellow alcoholic in need at night in his hospital room during a recent hospitalization at Novant Matthews, even though, David knew his time on earth was nearing its end.
Of all who knew and loved David Gale, none were more important than his family. Mr. Gale was predeceased by a sister, Patricia (Pat) Ann Gale Collins, and a brother, Fred Martin Gale.
