News from City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services

Thanksgiving Holiday Collection Schedule

Solid Waste Services will not provide Curb it! collection services - garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste - on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24. Collection services will be on a one-day delay with Thursday residents receiving service on Friday, November 25. Friday residents will receive service on Saturday, November 26.

Residents are reminded of the following tips to ensure collection:

  • Bag all garbage before placing it in the rollout cart. Do not overfill the cart.
  • Remove food/liquid residue from all recyclable containers before placing them in the recycling cart. Tear not fold cardboard into small pieces that will fit loosely into your cart. Pieces should not exceed 18 in x 18 in. Please do not bag recyclables.
  • Trimmings from shrubs and trees must be no longer than five feet in length and no larger than four inches in diameter.
  • Place leaves in untied plastic bags or uncovered trash cans (not City-issued rollout carts).
  • Place collection materials curbside by 6:30 am on collection day. Rollout carts must be removed from curbside by midnight the same day.
  • Place collection items within six feet of the curb. Please do not block the sidewalk.

Call 311 (704.336.7600) or visit curbit.charlottenc.gov to schedule bulky waste collection.

Wait ... Stop, Don't Put Batteries In Your Recycling Cart!

Do not recycle batteries image

What do you do with old batteries? Batteries can be taken to a local retailer or to a full service recycling center. Don't place batteries in your curbside recycling cart. Batteries contain toxic chemicals which can be harmful. In fact, there was an incident recently at the Materials Recovery Center, where our recyclables are processed, due to someone recycling a laptop battery in their cart. The battery ignited on the floor but fortunately no one was harmed and there wasn't damage to the facility. To avoid this from happening again, don't place batteries of any type in your recycling cart.

We want you to continue to recycle but recycle the right way by knowing what you can and can't recycle in your cart and which items need to be taken to a recycling center.
