  • Trimmings from shrubs and trees must be no longer than five feet in length and no larger than four inches in diameter.
  • Place leaves in untied plastic bags or uncovered trash cans (not City-issued rollout carts). Leaf bags will be taken and not left curbside.

Holiday Waste Management...What To Do With Your Stuff!

Happy Holiday Image

"Tis the season to give to family and friends, but it's also the season for more waste. Here's what to do with that extra waste:

Recycling

  • Be sure to recycle holiday items such as wrapping paper and cardboard.
  • Recycle extra cardboard by tearing it into pieces no larger than 18 in. x 18 in. and placing it beside (not on top) of the cart.
  • Do not place plastic bags, Styrofoam, foil wrapping paper, packing peanuts and bubble wrap in your recycling cart.
  • Do not recycle plastic film. Take plastic to grocery stores to recycle.
  • Plastic bags cannot be recycled in your curbside cart, take them to grocery stores to recycle.

Yard Waste

  • Natural Christmas trees will be collected on your normal collection day starting January 2. Please remember to remove lights and decorations.
  • While raking leaves and placing them at the curb for collection, put leaves and grass clippings in untied bags no larger than 32 gallons. All leaf bags will be collected and disposed of after collection.

Bulky Waste

  • Artificial Christmas trees must be scheduled for bulky waste collection. To schedule, call CharMeck 311 or visit curbit.charlottenc.gov.

Garbage

  • If you have extra garbage, bag it and place beside (not on top) of the cart.

New Size Preparation For Cardboard Recycling

We want your cardboard so prepare it correctly for recycling collection! Before you were asked to cut, not fold, cardboard in 3 ft. x 3 ft. pieces and put it in the recycling cart for collection. Sometimes the cardboard and other recyclables would get stuck in the cart because the cardboard dimensions were not ideal for the cart. Well, we've fixed that issue with the new requirements:

Tear cardboard into small pieces that will fit loosely into your cart. Pieces should not exceed 18 in. x 18 in. Please do not fold.

Missed Collection? Leave Your Cart Curbside Until Collected

If you reported a missed recycling collection to CharMeck 311, please leave your cart with properly prepared recyclables curbside until your missed collection is provided the next day. Call CharMeck 311 (704.336.7600) or visit recycleit.charlottenc.gov to obtain your collection day.

Some Of Us Still Have Them ... Here's How To Get Rid Of CD & DVD Cases!

Outdated and pretty much a thing of the past but some of us still have CDs and DVDs! How do we get rid of the cases was a question asked by a resident? Well definitely not in your City curbside recycling rollout cart! The cases can be taken to an electronic store for recycling or to a charitable organization that accepts items for recycling. If you're crafty, there are thousands of ideas online for the cases. If those options are not feasible, the last suggestion for disposal is trashing it...ugh! It is estimated that those cases takes almost a million years to decompose in the landfill!

Don't forget there are exceptions in place right after the Holidays for extra trash and cardboard.
