Mecklenburg County Democratic Party Executive Board Resolution against elected Democrats voting for Republican leadership on Mecklenburg County Commission:
Resolution Holding Democratic Elected Officials Accountable 2017 - 01
WHEREAS the results of the 2016 General election revealed that At-Large Democratic candidates for County Commissioner received an overwhelming 79.57% of all votes cast leaving the Republican candidate with 20.43% of total votes cast; and
WHEREAS these statistics show that voters of Mecklenburg County overwhelmingly chose Democrats to serve in leadership roles on the County Commission; and
WHEREAS Democrats Ella Scarborough and Pat Cotham voted along with three Republicans to elect Commissioner Scarborough chair of the Commission while the remaining four Democrats voted for Democratic Commissioner Trevor Fuller; and
WHEREAS Republican Commissioner Jim Puckett was nominated by Republican Commissioner Bill James to serve as vice chair and he was, in fact, elected by the same five to four margin, i.e., Democrats Scarborough and Cotham plus three Republicans voted for Puckett while the remaining four Democrats voted against Puckett; and
WHEREAS Democrats on the Commission had to fight for inclusion of all Democrats on Standing and Ad Hoc committees; and
WHEREAS Republicans make no apologies for assuming control of the North Carolina House and Senate as well as the Congress, or for not reaching across the aisle to reach bipartisan consensus on issues; and
WHEREAS the Republican agenda has moved to the extreme right causing basic human rights such as health care and equality to be jeopardized;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party expresses its disappointment in Democratic Commissioners Ella Scarborough and Pat Cotham and any elected Democrat who fails to see the value of supporting other Democrats and sharing leadership opportunities with members of her/his own party; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that at this crucial time, it is imperative that the Democratic Party show strength and unity; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Mecklenburg County Democratic party sends a message to all Democratic elected officials that the party holds them accountable for their actions and will find it difficult if not impossible to advocate for the candidacies of Democrats who favor Republicans over Democrats for leadership positions.
