Hidden Gems of Her Story
Your self-guided tour to Charlotte’s Black History

Tucked in and around the buildings that form Charlotte’s gleaming skyline, you’ll find hidden gems of her history.

Some of the most fascinating sites are those found in our city’s historically black neighborhoods, symbolizing the success and prosperity of black Charlotteans during the era after Reconstruction and the early 20th century. Many places were destroyed as part of urban renewal in the 1960s and 1970s. City government plays a unique role in the preservation of those that remain through the Charlotte Historic District Commission. Watch our video to see some amazing stories.

This self-guided tour provides the perfect way to discover Charlotte’s black history and pairs your outing with nearby food stops or recreational activities to offer a full experience.

Help Build Charlotte's Wall of Compassion with Blessing Boxes

Hearts were everywhere this time of year, during the month of love. What if heartfelt acts of kindness and compassion all across Charlotte were captured in one place?

Soon more than 150,000 will be, in a set of public art walls to go up across the city as part of About Face Charlotte’s Blessing Box campaign. City of Charlotte employees are joining in efforts to make this public display of affection a reality.
