DONATED CLOTHING GIVEN A NEW LIFE AT REPURPOSED: AN UPCYCLED FASHION + AUCTION

Fashion Show image 2

More than 250 attendees joined Crown Keepers and Solid Waste at REPURPOSED Fashion Show + Auction on Feb. 11.  The event featured 20 local designers and models who ripped the runway in beautiful, unique garments made from items found in GoodWill Industries of the Southern Piedmont and Value Village stores around the Charlotte area. The items were auctioned off and proceeds benefited three local environmentally-focused organizations - Sustain Charlotte, Hip Hop Caucus, and  Pop Up Produce. This event not only benefitted the organizations, but also the community and environment. Upcycling clothing and furniture is a great way to reduce items going to the landfill. SPRING CLEAN BY SCHEDULING YOUR BULKY WASTE & MORE

It's time for spring cleaning! What should you do with the things you no longer want? Don't throw them all in the garbage; there are more options that are better for you and the environment.

Getting rid of a slightly used sofa set and some raggedy end tables?

Consider donating the sofa set to someone or an organization that accepts gently used items. The end tables won't be accepted by an organization in their condition; they can't be reused or upcycled, so schedule them for bulky waste collection. Solid Waste offers curbside collection scheduled online or call CharMeck 311 (704.366.7600).

Upgrading your kitchen with new appliances and getting rid of everything? Learn more about how you can safely dispose of these items in an environmentally-friendly way.

One last tip, while you are cleaning with aerosol cans and bottles, don't forget those containers can be recycled once they are empty.

  • Trimmings from shrubs and trees must be no longer than five feet in length and no larger than four inches in diameter.
  • Place leaves in untied plastic bags or uncovered trash cans (not City-issued rollout carts).
  • Place collection materials curbside by 6:30 am on collection day.
  • Place collection items within six feet of the curb. Please do not block the sidewalk
