Just for discussion purposes, which drugs do you legalize???   All of them?    How about morphine?   Heroin?  Ecstasy?   How about other prescription drugs?   Some people may believe they need something that is not a narcotic, but rather a heart or cancer drug and they can't get a doctor to prescribe it.   Maybe they are hypocondriacs.  How about those types of drugs.   If you restrict any type of drug, won't that be the next "illegal" drug?   Just asking.

Well, I beieve you answered your own question, "Ya gotta draw a line in the sand somewhere and mean it."  So, what does that mean?  Is sending someone to jail for possessing  a little marijuana the right thing to do or should those who sell  the hard stuff just be shot on the spot.  People are being killed every day and lives ruined and most end up in prison for life because many states have no death penalty anymore.  I guess I can say I do not see a line of any kind in the sand that means anything today but something has to be done.

And if this is the case "Legalize drugs and drug dealers won't go away. They'll turn to other crimes." Many are already involved in other types of criminal activity so what would be the difference?

Those are all good points Hiroad.  We all lnow that prescription drugs can and are abuzed but they are legal when prescribed by a doctor so maybe that should be the case if drugs are made legal.  I don't believe we shouldgive up on people who are hooked on drugs and I would guess that many would like to kick the habit.  I don't know which drugs should be made legal but those who use them could enter a program to help them stop while getting off drugs gradually.  Right now, they have to buy drugs illegally and end up robbing and stealing from others to pay for their habit.  Whole families have suffered and many children born to addicts suffer along with their parents.

To "draw that line in the sand" that Nedl suggests would probably not involve legalizing all drugs, so it is probable that those drugs would be the target of the drug pushers.  So now we have the hard drugs and prescription drugs to be considered and I am hopeful we hear more on this from others who post here.
