In my opinion, both the management and labor of Int. Harvester/Farmall probably look back, as they near the end, and consider themselves fools.   That kind of crap is still going on today.  Short term thinking and unintended consequences produce regret.

Anyway, Here ya go:

If you remember how the events came down when Farmall & most of International Harvester closed you will remember about a year before they closed there was a strike company wide. With the big issue being the company wanted cost reduction in the form of wage cuts. The union agreed to the wage reductions with the stipulation of when the 3 year contract expired the wages would go back to the old rate before the reductions.

Archie McCardel told the negotiators to go to hell and walked out so the union went on strike. Around the end of the strike the recession started and the company had a large inventory that they could not get rid of and in turn ended up closing the doors.

How I know this is because I was friends with both the president and shop chairman of the local union. I also had a brother, two cousins, and a uncle employed there. I also had several friends that transfered to the truck plant in Ohio under the chain wide senority clause to work until they had full retirement rights.
