Did anyone see the story about downtown and opies store closing? I'm wondering why the city wont invest the money in the downtown area instead of 8 million for another new jail that we DONT NEED.....and most people dont want it...at least the people ive talked too.....why not take that 8 million and make loans to buisiness' down there or incentives for people to put buisiness' there.......just a thought..

Yes I read the story and hate to see Jeff close shop but I understand his reasons. If I received his message right it was the lack of people that shop down there anymore. I am as guilty as most because I just do not go down town very often and I believe there are a lot of people that do the same thing.

Lacking a car, downtown is the only place I can easily get to. It's becoming quite the ghost town. Downtown is becoming little more than bars seperated by vacant buildings.I can already visualize the hot sun beating down, dust and tumbleweeds blowing about the street, wind whistling through the deserted buildings. Goodbye downtown.

Kenn, I agree with you.  Downtown businesses seem to be a thing of the past.  Have you ever noticed, that when they talk about downtown Muscatine, that they don't even mention 3rd street?  It sounds like the downtown business association isn't as active as it should/could be.  I still say that the business association should go up to Galena and camp on their door for a month or two!  They SEEM to be doing something right!  We've got the same river, the same kind of old/unique buildings.  I just don't know why they can consistently make it, and, Muscatine can't?  And folks, PLEASE don't blame it on Wal-Mart.  Shackman.
