Well, Mall, you can and do say whatever you want, but facts are facts. According to IRS, unemployment IS taxable income. So, if Susie Soursocks recieved a 400.00 per week check, and therefore "earned" 20,800.00 for the year, and claimed the standard 3,650.00 personal exemption, she would owe taxes on 17,150.00. Again, according to IRS tables for single filers, that puts her in the 15% bracket, which means she owes 2,625.00 to Uncle Sam. Feel free to check math and scources. |

Mallory, FYI, Un-employment benefits ARE considered taxable income and there is nothing withheld from any such check. So, those unemployed can find themselves owing quite a tax bill if they are single or have other income.
