Higher taxes????

Posted in: Muscatine

Who said anything about food stamps (a program rife with fraud)?  The assertion was that no one on public assistance would have a tax obligation.  Un-employment is public assistance and, is considered taxable income.  The figures I outlined are in line with reality for a single filer.  I know several people who match the given illustration.  One such person explained to me recently that she could have taken a job but, she would only clear about 100.00 more a week than she was already getting so, why get out of bed for that?

You would think that the dems would be in favor of halting further extensions of un-employment.  Once you are off the un-employment rolls you are no longer counted as unemployed, plus most of those folks might actually work at finding a job, both of which would lower the unemployment rate.  Then Obama could boast and brag some more!

I think we're talking different things, but even so the $400 a week sum is high. According to this the Max. amount is $406 or just 27% of your gross income for the reporting quarter.

Notice $59 is the low end. How does that math play out?

I think the story of the person who preferred laziness over a job is one of the major concepts in judgement that hurt America today. Sad when we think about it. We think it wiser to sit on ones butt, and fraud the system, than to take employment and better ourselves.

TP, two of the people I know are currently recieving 389.00 per week.  OK, so I rounded.  The difference is academic, taxes are owed.

I remember nearly 30 years ago, I collected unemployement for 4 weeks.  At that time, you got a maximum 26 weeks of benefits, period.  You knew you'd better find a job of some kind by then or, you were S.O.L., no extensions.  Plus you had to provide them with the names of three places you had applied for work each week.  Today, even though you supposedly have to be actively seaching for work, there are no such weekly requirements.  Or so I'm told.

I'm not an expert on unemployment or taxes. I've been lucky enough to never have to use my unemployment benefits and I have a trusty tax man for that other side of the coin. Regardless, you've made your point to a certain degree. Altough I'd like to meet that person paying taxes on unemployment.

Since my last name is curious, my burning question is what does it matter to you if anyone pays taxes, whether they get unemployment or a paycheck? And why would you want to meet someone who has to pay taxes on their unemployment benefits? I have no personal knowledge on the subject and I kind of figure that it is between the irs and the person. Live and let live.
