Dear Pinewood Elementary and Madison Park Families and Community Members,
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our community meeting and shared your questions, perspectives and feedback regarding the future of the property adjacent to Pinewood Elementary School. We appreciate your participation and engagement throughout this process and your continued commitment to the Madison Park community.
For many years, neighbors have used portions of the Pinewood Elementary property for outdoor recreation and informal park activities. While this community use has developed over time, no formal agreement currently governs use of the property or establishes responsibility for its maintenance, management and oversight.
Our goal is to establish a clear, sustainable framework that supports continued community access, improves safety and stewardship of the property, and assigns clear responsibilities for long-term maintenance and oversight.
As shared during the meeting, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools plans to work with Mecklenburg County to formalize the property as Madison Central Park through the existing Master Joint Use Agreement between CMS and Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation. This agreement provides a framework for shared use and stewardship of designated properties while ensuring there is no conflict with the site's primary educational purpose.
This path forward will allow continued neighborhood access to green space while providing clearer oversight and maintenance responsibilities, protecting the site's existing trees and natural character, and preserving flexibility for future district planning needs.
As part of our next steps, CMS will collaborate with Mecklenburg County to add Madison Central Park to the Master Joint Use Agreement. We will also work with the Dilworth Youth Sports Association to identify an alternative location for practice field activities.
We recognize how important this space is to the Madison Park community, and we are grateful to everyone who has taken the time to participate in this conversation. Your feedback and engagement are important as we work together toward a solution that supports our students, families and the broader community.
