Volunteer Spotlight!
Outward Bound Students from West Charlotte High School
This month we would like to highlight the students from the Outward Bound Program at West Charlotte High School! These students and their teachers pulled out over 25 bags of trash from Irwin Creek, including one very stubborn tire that took a tough team to remove! Thank you, West Charlotte students. You made a wonderful impact on Irwin Creek!
Pollution Prevention at Home!
You can have a stormwater-friendly lawn by practicing “green” yard care. Excess fertilizer and chemicals used in your yard can be expensive and pollute streams and lakes. Here are a few easy ways to practice green yard care at home:
Test your soil every few years to find out how much fertilizer your yard really needs.
Free Soil Testing kits are available through Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District.
Leave grass clippings on the lawn for a natural fertilizer.
Avoid using fertilizer or lawn chemicals before a rain event.
Sweep up fertilizer that spills on to the driveway or sidewalks.
Many of us are out enjoying our lakes around the County and it’s important to know that the waters are safe for recreation. Orange water could indicate excess sediment, gray water could indicate sewage contamination, and green water could indicate a harmful algal bloom. If you come across any discolored water, please report it to 311. Always remember to wait 72 hours after a rain event to engage in water recreation in our coves. If you would like to be notified of any swim advisories in our area, text MECKNOSWIM to 888-777 to get them sent straight to your phone. We will also be posting updates all summer long on our social media pages (@StormWaterCM).
