Anyone that has been by my house for the last several months have noticed bamboo out on pickup day.    

The bamboo all bloomed out this spring.   It has been in my yard for 30 plus years.    I knew something was off when no new shoots came up in the yard.   Then all the leaves came off.   It was replaced at the tops with this straw like dried shoots aka flowers.  Also known as bamboo rice.   Once it blooms it all dies.

All the bamboo over at Park Road Park on the east side of Park Road has also died.

When certain varieties bloom it all blooms at the same time and dies.   Some varieties don't bloom for over a hundred years.  It is very rare.   Others types bloom around 25 years or longer. 

The bamboo in my neighbors rear yards has also bloomed out.   The seeds will drop and start brand new very small shoots, but all the old stuff dies and will have to come down.  My plan is to try and stop any new shoots.   I liked it when it was thick.  You literally could go in 2 feet and someone could not see you standing in the grove of bamboo.   My dogs would go in and I could not see them.  

So it has to come out.   You can haul it to a full service Meck county center that takes yard waste, but you still have to cut it to 5 or 6 feet long.  Once at a full service center you have to pay and unload it.  So it is nice the City of Charlotte picks it up bit by bit till one day it will be all gone.  I almost never put out yard waste for pickup.   Only if a large limb comes down do I ever have yard waste.   I have made up for it the last 4 months.   

Another neighbor down the block must have a different variety as hers did not bloom.    About 5 houses in my area bloomed out.
