Welcome

Welcome everyone to the new 29th & Askew Neighborhood Block Club website.

The 29th & Askew block of Kansas City, Missouri is a vibrant neighborhood block with a rich and exciting heritage and history.

For example, in 1938, the Kansas City Bible School was started in the basement of the church at 29th and Askew. Students lived in nearby houses rented as dormitories and studied under teachers who held down numerous jobs to pay the bills. But the men and women who had trusted God to start this little institution refused to let such things confine them. Six students graduated the next year. There have been over 1200 graduates since that time, although the school has since moved to Overland Park, Kansas.

During the 1960’s, at the height of the civil rights movement in Kansas City, 29th & Askew was home to a diverse group of individuals, including a prominent pediatrician, a psychiatrist, a high school principal, a nurse, a union leader, an insurance executive, a preacher, postal workers, government workers, business owners and community leaders. And as one might expect, the residents of 29th & Askew were actively involved in the civil rights movement in Kansas City, MO, and were known for being upfront with their political views. Even the children had organized as a block club, meeting every Friday with refreshments—purchased with money earned from lawn care, babysitting and paper routes.

And that same dedication to excellence and community development continues today, with the on-the-block presence of Community United, KC -- a charitable organization founded in 1997 that connects the community to housing, mentoring, and various other social outreach programs and activities.

The 29th & Askew Neighborhood Block Club website is a great place to get information about the latest neighborhood events and developments. So please visit often.

And, please feel free to participate in the community forum, as your comments will not only help to identify the needs of 29th & Askew residents, but neighboring communities as well.

Together we can make a difference.

Thank you.
