It was just in the QC Times and on TV 6 that it would appear that there is a 'crew' that goes out and paints over graffiti. I just recycled my newspapers or I would try to find the article and pictures. I think it was in Davenport. Frankly, I would think that the owners of the places the get 'graffitied' would have enough pride in their property to want to ge rid of it ASAP - but what do I know? I have family that live out of state and had their business building attacked by graffiti thugs and their graffiti was painted over as the first order of business - of course the authorities were notified. Maybe the 'absent owners' of buildings that get the gang messages are the ones that should be reminded to clean up the graffiti - somehow they are not getting the message that graffiti begets graffiti just like trash begets trash. I hate to see anyone throw their trash in a parking lot or a roadside ditch as other numbskulls do the same. Persons who have no respect for other persons property are the offenders and property owners need to send a message that they respect their own property and will continue to clean up graffiti until it no longer is the public billboad that the graffiti thugs desire. Perhaps we need to be more vigilant of our own and our 'neighbors' property and graffiti will die a natural death.

Frankly, I would think that the owners of the places the get 'graffitied' would have enough pride in their property to want to ge rid of it ASAP - But JC while i believe your statement to be true, there are always circumstances beyond someones control .....for instance people who live elsewhere during the winter, the elderly, the poor who couldnt go out and buy the stuff to do it. Kas Kelly said she's not a painter, she said her work wont be pretty, she said the colors may not even match.........so Kas and her cronies are gonna come in and do a half assed job of it? I agree with you, but ticketing the victim is wrong! |

I agree that as a property owner, you would probably want to get rid of the graffiti. If somebody threw a brick through your window, you'd fix the window, whether or not the person who did it got caught. The police can't be everywhere. It would be nice if the police department was staffed well enough so they had personnel to watch over areas where this happens, but that's not reasonable to expect. That said, I don't think they should expend the time/effort to go and ticket a homeowner. There has got to be something more critical going on they could focus on. I do not agree, though, with ticketing or fining the homeowner. Yes, it would be nice if the graffiti was removed in a timely manner, but that's not always possible. Graffiti is a problem, but is it really the biggest problem our community faces? I think the city council could focus their attention to something more meaningful.
