JOS was defending acorns registering thousands and thousands of voters who were either fictional, dead or that they registered LOTS of times cause they paid them to register. So acorn is collecting money from us - taxpayers - to do what? If that isn't fraud and a taxpayer ripoff, just what is?
That's a pretty simplified version of it jc. As I'm sure you would agree, the legitimacy of a voter's registration shouldn't be left up to a group such as ACORN. Luckily for all of us, it isn't.
ACORN hires people to go out and register voters. These people are paid according to the number of completed voter registration cards that they turn in. In the events that have been alluded to, a very small percentage of ACORN employees turned in fraudulent cards in order to increase their pay. Since ACORN doesn't get to make the decision regarding legitimacy, they sort the registration cards and flag the ones they believe to be fraudulent. All the registration cards must then be turned over to the local authorities who get to make the final determination regarding legitimacy. There is no evidence that any of the fraudulent voter registration cards resulted in a single vote. Hopefully, the person[s] responsible for submitting the fraudulent cards will be or has been prosecuted. ACORN was simply doing what the law requires of them.
Frankly, I think that a person should not be able to register to vote on election day and then turn right around and vote. W-A-A-A-Y too dicey for my taste. We have campaigns that are HIGHLY advertised for more than a year and if you just happened to wake up and decide you want to vote - I say too bad so sad. If you haven't given any more thought to the issues and the candidates than this last minute crap - forget about it
Ironically, this is a perfect case for why we need organizations like ACORN. Due to age, immobility, or economic hardship (among other things), there are some who don't manage to register to vote. ACORN fills that gap. They go out and register people ahead of time so that they're registered before election day. You may not like the fact that ACORN leans democratic, but they're helping people do exactly what you're advocating for in your post. They're making sure that people don't just wake up and decide to vote, thereby avoiding "this last minute crap."
