Thanks for the offer to shoot. I've shot many of guns in my day, mainly small cal. hand guns. I never was very good with a rifle.

I look at self defense as keeping my self alive. If someone pulls a gun, bat or knife and hopes to do harm to me my only defense would be to get away. I guess what I'm saying is, isn't the best way not to get hurt in a fight is to not get in a fight.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the law states that under the defense claim one can only use force equel to or less then that being used against them. A defense claim is not allowed when leaving the situation is an option.... et Bar fights or some domestic situations.

Peace

Lame chosen, very lame. Even many liberals would put up a fight to protect their families and homes. And your answer is to run.

Don't know about Iowa but there are states where you don't have to run from your house if you can defend it. Your home is your castle.

Dave,

In Iowa the law allows the use of reasonable force.

As described the use of reasonable force is that which any reasonable person should expect to be used, or need be used.  A law enforcement officer is allowed to escalate to the next level in the use of force continuum.  Law enforcement officers are taught that in a fair fight they have already lost.  They are not there to enter into a fair fight but to enforce the law and must use whatever reasonable force is required.  Your last sentence is probably the most appropriate and should be the first option of any reasonable person outside of law enforcement, when leaving is an option by all means that is the best and most acceptable alternative.

Now you probably noticed the possible overuse of the word reasonable.  That's because most laws are defined in that manner, what a reasonable person would do, think or say.

All this being said I am not a lawyer nor a law enforcement officer and offer this only as information to be used for thought and not as legal advice.
