Is homophobia a choice?

Posted in: Muscatine

Right or wrong, homophobe is a label that gets applied to not just to the Rev. Phelps of the world, but also pretty much anyone that openly admits to being repulsed by homosexuality. With respect to the latter, is such a repulsion a choice, or is it just how these people were born?

thoughts?

Personally I'm not sure, but its highly correlated with stupidity. Is stupidity learned or inherited?

"...but its highly correlated with stupidity."

Is that opinion/judgement of yours by choice; or is it just how you were born? How was it you put that together?

People that are repulsed by homosexuality would seemingly be judgemental, at minimum, no?

You correlating that with stupidity would seemingly be judgemental, at minimum, no?

Would it appear you're in the same class?

Hi TP BBSmile

I didn't quite understand the point? But, to take a shot here:::I'd say that being repulsed by the unnatural isn't really a judgemental issue. It seems to me that it wouldn't be any different than saying you are disgusted by liver and onions. Unless of course you actually like that "gunk." I Love! onions, liver? Not so much. By that then, I'm just stating a personal preference/opinion. If I went so far as to condemn or ridicule that person who likes liver and onions? there lies judgement. This is a loaded issue for many of us and if given half a chance, this could spiral into another over the top argument.  Now before I get pounced on here, I say "unnatural" because it simply is::: at least from a God fearing sociological perspective. I do believe that beinga gay man or woman is a genetic/mental response to an anomaly in the genetic code of every person. Like having six toes or one green and one blue eye. It's not learned and therefore one cannot choose what they were born to be. Now bi and experimentation have their own genetic tic as it were. But knowing we like the same sex or not, isn't actually for any of us to judge. Unnatural is a daisy growing from a rose bush. An apple growing from an orange tree. A Robin sneakingaround with a blue Jay. Or how about the last time you saw an elephant swapping fluids with a hippo? Nature seems to have an order and though you might see a daisy on a rose bush, or apple onan orange tree, it takes our intervention to cause that. I wondered for a long time too:::Is Ross, David Schwimmer from Friends gay? Heard he was but always thought he couldn't be. Joey? cool but I had a crush on Ross. Hubby already knows, besides he's in love with Terry Hatcher.

I think it's learned.   If people weren't taught to hate them or at least treat them less friendly than the rest of the population, there would be no homophobia.    I disdagree with those who say same sex attraction is not natural.    It occurs in many species, not just homo sapiens.    So I think it is a naturally occuring phenomena.
